How does Secret Santa work?
This is just a super duper quick overview of Secret Santa. I have a complete guide to Secret Santa Rules, including some fun twists you can add to the game! Check it out here!
If you haven’t been a part of a Secret Santa gift exchange, here’s a quick rundown of how everything typically works…
First, you gather a group of people. Typically these are family members, or coworkers, or maybe even a friend group.
Once you have your participants, you write down everyone’s name on a piece of paper. An alternative to this, is you can have each person write their own name on a piece of paper along with a few ideas of what they’d like to receive.
I have played it both ways – writing down ideas for gifts for myself and not writing them down. I find both ways fun, it just depends on your group.
If the group you’re working with isn’t necessarily close enough to everyone else in the group to be able to guess what to get someone, you may want each person to write down some ideas.
Whichever you decide, at the end you will put all the names in a bag, a bowl, a hat, etc. and each person will draw a name. If someone draws their own name, they should put it back in the bag and draw again!
The only thing left to do is to set a budget – which you should probably talk over with other participants to make sure everyone is on the same page – along with a date to exchange gifts.
Rules to Secret Santa
Aside from the guidelines above, the only other thing you’ll want to plan out is how you’ll exchange gifts.
One way is obviously everyone giving their gift to the intended recipient.
Another option, is to have everyone put only the names of the recipient on the gift tags, and leave the “From” area blank. Then, when the person gets and opens their gift, they have to guess who gave it to them!
